With all the crazy weather we have had lately, it’s always good to be prepared for a blackout. The International Association o Fire Chiefs, Energizer and the American Meterological Society have teamed up for National Education Weather Preparedness Program.

Spring is here with all the beautiful flowers blooming and birds singing. Spring can also bring some servere storms with a lot of rain, tornados etc.  To help familys make sure they are prepared for spring, summer or hurricane season. Storms can lead to power outages and put families in a lot of danger. A great way to be prepared is to have a emergency power kit ready.

Here are some tips for what some tips for what to keep in your emergency kit.

  • Battery powered radio or crank radio, to keep you updated on weather changes.
  • Plenty of extra batteries, all sizes, to keep you going through and after the storm.
  • A flashlight for every family member, do not use candles they can be hazordous.
  • battery powered cell phone charger, to keep you in touch with family.
  • Speciality batteries, if you have a health condition hearing aid blood pressure or gluclose monitor, have the vatteries you need.

In addition to the power kit, here are some other things to have around:

  • water, if water becomes contaminated.
  • non-perishable food and manuel can opener.
  • wet ones wipe, when soap and water are not available.
  • a first aid kit
  • special items for infants or elderly

“We cannot stress enough the importance of using flashlights and lanterns instead of candles during power outages,” said Chief Jeffrey Johnson, EFO, CFO, MIFireE and president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.  “Candles cause an average of nearly 15,000 home fires each year, resulting in significant numbers of preventable injuries and deaths.  An emergency power kit can literally be a beacon of light in a storm and can help prevent needless home fires caused by candles.”

  5. We always keep extra c and D batteries around for our big flashlights…because of course, they are always dead when we NEED them! We also have stash of candles, matches, and those clicker fire starter things! We also make sure to unplug everything (except for one thing…the fridge!) as soon as the electricity does go out…that way, if it comes back on suddenly…we don’t have a power surge ruin everything…which has happened to us.

  12. We have flashlights in every room of the house, and I candles in the main rooms. This way if the power goes out We’re not scrambling trying to find a flashlight!

  13. I keep flashlights on every level and always in the same spot. That way, if the power goes out, I know which way to head!

  14. My tip for power outages is to have a bag of ice in your freezer or coolor packs to throw in a cooler so you don’t lose food.
