Valentines Day Dinner #HormelFamily

Growing up I never really celebrated Valentines day, it was always a bad time in my family.  Now that I am older, I celebrate it but don’t really make that big of a deal about it. Usually we just have a nice family dinner, or go out to eat as a family.   This  year unfortunately my husband had some business dinners to attend. (Yeah, I know on Valentines day of all days). So it was just me and the kids for Valentines day dinner.

So, since I don’t have a nice romantic dinner to share, I will share my idea of a typical Valentines Day for me.

The table would be set nice.

Witha  table cloth and the plates and silver ware set orderly. No candles though

house-of-tsang-products

Valentines Day dinner would consist of something new and different like teryaki chicken or some kind of stir fry wrap as a appetizer using Sesame Oil.

then the main course would consist of Like steak and sausage, with mashed potatoes and vegetables and rice.

What did your Valentines Day sinner consist of?

What to Make with All Those Holiday Leftovers #HormelFamily

I have never been a big person on eating leftovers, but they have to get eaten. I always look to create new and great recipes with the leftovers.
This holiday season we had Ham galore.

We had a ham dinner for Christmas and another for New Years Eve dinner. We had leftovers both times.
The kids weren’t to thrilled about all the leftovers, so we made the next best thing for them. A big breakfast.

Ham and Eggs!

Today is Milk Day

Today January 11, is National Milk Day.

Did you know that milk was delivered daily in the old days via cart and horse. The milk man would scoop up milk and place in your pitcher right in the street.
In 1878 when milk started being delivered in a steralized glass bottle, it was big news. They decided to commemorate the event by creating National Milk Day on January 11.
Today, milk has to stay chilled for it to be fresh, which makes it hard to have on the go. Now though, you can have single serving grade A milk that has a shelf life of 6 months. Perfect for on the go and lunch boxes. It’s part of the Milk Unleashed campaign, all about shelf safe milk.

We were introduced to different brands of Shelf milk and my kids love them. They are so excited about all the different flavors. Chocolate, strawberry, white chocolate and regular.

Adding some Culture to your holiday meal #HormelFamily

I’ll admit it. I am a very picky eater, I will usually choose a Hamburger over any else. I am not big on Ethnic food at all, but since my husband is I will give it a try from time to time.

Growing up I always just had a Turkey celebration with my family.  My husband though always had a traditional Lebanese dinner with Grape Leaves and more.  So he has always had a taste for having big celebrations with tons of different foods.

This Christmas we Decided we would give everything we ate a new twist. We prepared a Hormel Cure 81 Ham for our Christmas dinner, we usually have turkey.  So that was a delicious and great difference.  We also had potatoes with Hormel bacon pieces and salad with Peloponnese Kalamata Pitted Olives.

I have really enjoyed adding a little twist and flavor to my holiday meals.

What is a tradition for holiday meals for you? Do you have a traditional ethnic meal you prepare?

Udi’s 14 Day Challenge

I always try to eat healthy, but sometimes my emotions get the best of me, and I give in to the unhealthy food.

So when I was approached about doing the 2 week Udi Gluten Free Challenge, I said yes. Eating Gluten free for 2 weeks sounded so easy to me as I don’t eat a lot of Gluten or dairy products anyway.

I started out with the meal plan they had provided

Breakfast: Egg whites for breakfast

Lunch: Chicken and salad

Snack: Trail mix

Dinner: Gluten Free Pizza

Every day the meal would change and by day 3 I was feeling great and then………..  Hurricane Sandy came and my whole diet and challenge was thrown out the window. We had no power, so i couldn’t cook and I was mainly just eating dry cereal, trail mix and sandwiches. My emotions got the best of me and it has been a big challenge.

Now that I have had my power back for 3 weeks I started the challenge again. It has been really tough as we are still getting thing s back to normal, but I have felt great and even lost 5 pounds (even though 4 came back when i stopped).

Some of my favorite Udi’s products through the challenge have been the Blueberry and Chocolate Muffin tops, and the Vanilla Granola.

I have felt better and overall just felt healthier during the challenge.

Disclosure: No formal compensation was received for this post. I received products and coupons to help me through the challenge. All opinions are 100% my own.

The Thing About Holiday Meals #HormelFamily

Every year for Thanksgiving we have always done Turkey, it seems to be a holiday tradition, and not to mention the one thing my kids will actually eat. You can’t have the turkey without all the great sides.

This year though we decided to be different and let the kids choose what they wanted for Thanksgiving dinner. Of course they picked something that would not really be considered a holiday meal. We went with it though! They chose Steak and veggie kabobs with ribs. Yes, I agree very far fetched, but we did that with the fixings.
My husband has a lactose intolerance, so we make everything leaving out a few ingredients. LIke Mashed Potatoes, we boil potatoes and then add Dairy Free butter and salt and pepper. That’s it! We also had corn and bread.

The food was a bit of a undertaking, the weather was nice so we were able to use the grill. We cooked the kabobs with chicken and sausage, and squash, potatoes, onions and Peloponnese peppers. The ribs were already pre made with Lloyd’s Beef BBQ ribs.

Of course we loved serving dinner with our new Thanksgiving pot holders and dish rags!

What did you do for Thanksgiving? Did you stick with Turkey and Ham? Do you have allergies to avoid when cooking?
