I got to review the Gourmet Cafe Kitchen, This is one of the new Kitchens featured for 2009. it’s features are:

  • Kitchen appliances include “stainless steel” oven, stove-top, refrigerator and coffee pot
  • Features open “window” for prep n’ serve play; builds cooperative learning skills
  • Provides plenty of storage space for playtime accessories – utensil hooks, “stainless steel” dish rack and removable fruit and veggie storage baskets
  • Features electronic sounds in both the stove top and phone
  • Special pot and pan activate electronic boiling and frying sounds in the stove’s front burner
  • Extra large & deep sink features a swiveling faucet, push button, and an additional prep sink area
  • Accessory set includes 2 table settings and serving utensils (accessories may vary)
  • Durable poly construction wipes clean easily and lasts for years
  • Requires 2 “AAA” and 2 “AA” batteries (not included)
  • Made in USA of US and imported parts (some accessories and phone made in China)
  • Minimal adult assembly required

When I saw the big box arrive I thought it was going to take forever to put together It was actually very simple, it comes in three large parts, and all you have to do is connect and put the screws in. One downside was there were no holes for the screws i had to make them.

We love this kitchen, it has plenty of accessories and tons of space,  I love the fact that it has hooks to hang your utensils on, and even a hook for the phone.

Step 2is also holding a contest  to celebrate creativity in the kitchen for both parents and kids, Step2 will award one grand-prize of a new dream kitchen suite from Frigidaire, including a refrigerator, dishwasher, over the counter microwave, and oven, as well as a new Step2 toy kitchen of their choice. The “Step2 Creative Kids in the Kitchen Contest” is asking families to submit an essay of 250 words or less on how they foster creativity when cooking and have fun in the kitchen together. Second place prize is a Step2 kitchen of their choice, while one third place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate good toward any toy on step2.com.

  90. My favorite food to make when I was little were ‘monster cookies’. My aunt always made them with us, they are gigantic cookies made with m&m’s, nuts and chocolate chips, yum!

  173. I used to make tacos out of a leaf, dirt, grass, and those red berries on evergreen bushes. Yummy!

  270. Ok, you might laugh, but my favorite thing to do was play in my outdoor kitchen (basically the patio). I would make little bowls out of leaves and acorn caps, and I read that native americans used to use acorns as food, so I would crush up acorns and try to make little bowls of acorn oatmeal (since that’s what it looked like to me). Luckily I also read that the acorns were very very bitter unless they were cooked, so I never tried to eat them!
    Also at the beach, there were these bushes along the dunes, and my cousins and I used to collect the bean-looking buds off them and pretend to cook them in clear plastic containers (the sun would heat up the water a bit). One time we offered our “cooked beans” to my uncle and he ATE ONE! We were horrified, we were sure we’d poisoned him! I found out later (on a high school field trip) that those plants actually are edible! 🙂 Oh, and now I’m remembering our clams packed full of sand that passed for anything from cake to pizza to soup, depending on our mood.

  272. I used to make fake pizza using pieces of dog food. Although my younger brother didn’t mind (and happily ate the “toppings”), I think our dog was a little annoyed!

  289. My favorite fake food was soup…we’d boat out to this little island and my sister and I would find shells or wood to use as bowls. Then we’d add some sea oats, sand, dried-out dead crab legs, whatever we could find on the beach and mix it all up with twigs. Yum!

  472. Pizza was my fave fake food. You can put all kinds of toppings on it. We would make non traditional ones like fruit salad pizza or roll up playdoh to make vienna sausage pizza.

    (and this is what I pretended to make)…don’t get grossed out…Tuna Pea Wiggle! It was a concoction of butter, flour, milk, tuna and peas, served on top of saltine crackers. Thanks for the memories!

  877. Pudding and cupcakes were my favorite to make. I had the coolest Fisher Price cupcakes, and beater for my pudding, and it was so GREAT. They don’t make the Fisher-Price stuff like they used too. Play food was so FUN growing up and my mom still has them at her house for the grandkids to play with.

  1047. I used to love to make ice cream. Since my mom wouldn’t buy me the toy ice cream maker, I would turn my tricycle upside down, spin the wheels, and somehow that made ice cream!

  1161. I always “cooked” in the bath tub. I would have pitchers and spoons and cups, I would make a pitcher full of soapy water and call it tea. I would fill glasses and my aunts would pretend to drink it, while secretly pouring it down the sink. I love those memories!

  1401. My favorite fake food to make as a tot was mud pies 😀 I’d grab a tin pie plate from my mom’s kitchen and “bake” in the backyard for hours. Made a mess, but had so much fun doing it! Some would have extra “chocolate” dusted on top.
