5 Disaster Relief Myths Explained

I know I am kindof skeptical of giving money to relief funds and charity, because you never really know where it goes.

www.worldvision.org US division is on the ground in Haiti and want to share where exactly donations go.

1.Collecting blankets, shoes and clothing is a cost-effective way to help -The cost of shipping these items from around the country – let alone the time it takes to sort, pack and ship them – is prohibitive and entails much higher cost than the value of the goods themselves. World Vision has relief supplies already stocked in disaster-prone countries as well as in strategically located warehouses around the world.  World Vision had supplies pre-positioned in Haiti in preparation for hurricane season, which allowed the agency to respond immediately to last week’s earthquake.

These supplies are designed to meet international standards for humanitarian relief and are packaged up and ready to deploy as soon as a crisis strikes. Cash donations are the best, most cost-effective way to help aid groups deliver these life-saving supplies quickly, purchase supplies close to the disaster zone when possible and replenish their stocks in preparation for future disasters.

2.If I send cash, my help won’t get there-Reputable agencies send 80 percent or more of cash donations to the disaster site; the rest is invested in monitoring, reporting and other activities that facilitate transparency and efficiency in their operations, as well as in sharing information with those who can help.  Donors have a right and a responsibility to ask aid groups how they will be using those donations, and what will be done with donations raised in excess of the need. Transparent and effective organizations will readily provide that information.

3. Volunteers are desperately needed in emergency situations-While hands-on service may feel like a better way to help in a crisis, disaster response is a highly technical and sensitive effort.  Professionals with specialized skills and overseas disaster experience should be deployed to disaster sites.  Volunteers without those skills can do more harm than good, and siphon off critical logistics and translations services.  Qualified disaster professionals ensure that help is delivered effectively, safely and efficiently.

4. Unaccompanied children should be adopted as quickly as possible to get them out of dangerous conditions-Hearing about the specific needs of children often sparks a desire to adopt children who seem to have lost their families.  However, early in a crisis, children need to be protected, but should remain in their home countries until authorities can confirm the locations of their family members and explore adoption possibilities within their own communities and cultures.  International adoption may be the best solution for some children, but it is too early to know for sure in the first weeks of a crisis.

5. People are helpless in the face of natural disasters-Even in the poorest countries like Haiti , people often reveal a great deal of inner strength and often show a resourcefulness that can save lives.  While support and aid are necessary, the Haitian people are by no means helpless.

Who I voted for in the will you marry me contest

Essence is holding a Will you Marry Me contest. They have selected 4 couples and the world will vote who gets their dream wedding.

I voted for Cleveland and Maya

Cleveland Sonny Carr, 30, is in the Army for nine years and is scheduled to make a fourth trip to Afghanistan in July 2010. He and his fiancée, Maya, have been together for one year but have known each other since the eighth grade. Maya teaches 7th grade reading, and is working on her Masters for School Administration. The relationship is long-distance, as he lives in Clarksville, TN, and she lives in Chicago, IL.

***I chose this couple, because they have come a long way and deserve it.  They have 3 children together and He will be deployed in July. Being a Former Army wife, i know the money is not that great, and it’s good to have the great memory of a wedding while deployed(what if something happens?).

I think this couple deserves to win, you should go vote for your couple

Let’s Explore: Dora’s Greatest Adventures DVD Review

It’s time to explore! Help Dora play hide and seek, rescue Baby Jaguar, catch the stars and so much more. There are eight fun-filled exploring episodes on this DVD.

Lost Map: Who do we ask for help when we don’t know which way to go? The Map!  Map gets taken away by a goofy bird for a stick. The bird flies Map all the way to the top of tallest Mountain. Dora and Boots draw their own map to help rescue their friend.

Hide and Go Seek: Dora and her friends are good at hiding, especially When Señor Tucán hides in the Rain Forest. If they can find all eight friends, Señor Tucán promises to introduce his new baby toucans.

Journey to the Purple planet: Blast off into outer space as Dora and Boots set off to bring 5 stranded space creatures back home to the Purple Planet. Travel on a rocket ship, travel through the Milky way, catch a ride on a comet, and go past the space rocks to bring Flinky, Inky, Plinky, Dinky and Al back home.

Rescue Rescue: Baby Jaguar is stuck in a tree, Isa is stuck in a big sand hole, and Benny is stuck in his balloon on top of Gooey Geyser. Dora and Boots need help to put the right rescue steps in order to save all three friends in time. It’s got to be fast, the fastest ever!

Boots to the rescue 412: Dora left her music homework in boots room. She needs Boots to bring it to her school so she can sing it to her class.  Boots is on his own and learns new Spanish words through the Up and Down Jungle, past the Robot House, and to Dora at school. (I speak Spanish and English too, I like them both how about you.)

Star Catching: Abuela gives Dora a special star pocket to catch explorer stars. She sets out to catch stars and catches her first one.Woo-Hoo The Peekaboo Star! But Swiper swipes the star pocket and ties it to a balloon that floats all the way up to cloud castle.  They set out to get Woo-Hoo back from the prince of the caste, but they need help from other Explorer Stars.

Star Mountain: Swiper swipes Dora’s favorite necklace and throws it all the way up to the top of Star Mountain! They need to run up the star steps, climb up the diamond, and go through ice wind and snow. They try to make it with the help of some Explorer Stars.

Swiper the Explorer Fox: Dora and Boots are playing catch when they find a lost baby fox. Swiper comes to swipe the ball, but when he sees the lost baby fox, he has a change of heart and decides to help. They set out and with Swipers help get past the volcano, over the prickers and thorns, and find baby fox’s mommy at the fox hole. Swiper even says Thank you!

****Wow over 3 hours of Dora, what a little girls dream! My daughters were mesmerized, even though some of the shows we had already seen on Nick Jr. My daughter really like Journey To The Purple Planet, because we have the video game for PS2.  I was really impressed with Swiper being so nice in the last episode, kind of gave me a different impression of the character now.

There is also a bonus feature: The game Dora’s Explorer World. This is a very fun game and my daughter said she felt like she was a real explorer.
