Update: 11/5/12 #hurricaneSandy

I just wanted to update everyone really quick. We still have no power after 7 days. Can you believe that 7 days.  No electric companies have even been on our side street to fix the powerlines that are down.

School has been canceled at the elementary school again today and tomorrow.  Conditions are just not stable enough for buses and only the school we attend still does not have power.  It’s really frustrating.

Luckily we are staying in a cabin provided by my husbands work. Hopefully when the Nor’ Easter hits on Wednesday we don’t lose power here again.

I will hopefully get back to regular posting this week.

Update: 11/1/12 #HurricaneSandy

We are in day 4 with no power, yet everyone around us has power. I mean literally the house next door, the gas station across the street and 7-11 on the other side of me.   We are on the power line associated with the downed street light. Hopefully we will get power today.

We have been living in the old days here. LOL!  We did all of our laundry by hand, and they are hanging around the house. We have been using out grill to heat water and been eating pretty much sandwiches.

All of the food we hd left in our fridge and freezer has been tarnished and thrown away, so we decided to use that as a reason to deep clean the refrigerator.  This storm has really kicked our asses.

After You get Married, You Still Need To Save

When I got married I did everything backwards. we did not have any money or family around. My then boyfriend was leaving for an overseas deployment, so we made a split decision and got married. We married in a court house and even kept our marriage a secret.  10 months after our marriage my husband was deployed and I had to learn how to balance our finances myself.

Here are some of my tips for post-marriage financial decisions.

Payments and debts- figure out what each of your debts and bills are and make a financial plan on what you can pay off and a monthly budget. Now that you are married your debts become each others debts.  We payed as much money towards our car payment to finally get it payed off and out of the way. Trust me having a  budget can save your marriage.

Save- you saved for your big wedding, now that it’s over you still need to save. You never know when something unexpected will come up and you need money.  I had my first child 2 weeks before my husband left on deployment. Luckily we had money saved up to fly my family out to help me while he was gone.

Plan ahead- Start planning ahead, can you afford a family now or is it a better idea for you to wait. The biggest thing is you want to make sure you and your spouse are on the same page about family planning. A child is a lot of money and you need to be prepared.

Do not finance- I guess it could be okay to finance a car if you can really not afford one straight out.  It is a bad idea to finance furniture or appliances, especially from Rent to own companies.  Always look for deals and second hand. All of our furniture was second hand when we first got married, except our bed.  The furniture lasted us a long time and saved us a lot of money.

Get prepared For Thanksgiving With Butterball Cookbook Plus App GiveawayClosed

Thanksgiving is not that far away and I have already started thinking about what I am going to cook. I have had plenty of disasters on Thanksgiving, so this year I want to be prepared for everything.

I recently came upon a new app to help with all your cooking needs and more. The Butterball Cookbook Plus App! The app is your source for great tasting recipes and ideas to make mealtime so much fun.

Every month new recipes will be added to the app at no charge. I love this app, it has made me understand why I’ve had meals turn out really bad.  I will definitely be on my game this year with cooking.

I have had a some good Family meals too. Some of my tips for preparing a  great Holiday Meal.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or look something up: I am constantly asking my mom how to make things or looking up recipes on the web. It makes life so much easier.
  2. Make sure you have enough food:  You should typically choose a turkey by alb per person and it never hurts to have left overs.
  3. Thaw Your Turkey: Be sure to thaw your turkey out in advance, for best results. This is one of my past disasters.

To help you prepare for your Thanksgiving this year: Butterball is giving away a Turkey gift check for a  free Turkey (up to $20.00)!

Stay Safe This Halloween with Fed ExClosed

****WINNER KAREN M.

Halloween can be a fun time for parents and kids, but it can also be scary, Not just for the decorations and costumes.

Here are some Safety tips provided By Fed Ex to hep make your Halloween safe.

  • Cross the street safely at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross. Walk, don’t run, across the street.
  • Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
  • Slow down and stay alert – watch out for cars that are turning or backing up and never dart out into the street or cross in between parked cars.
  • Costumes can be both creative and safe. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Masks can obstruct a child’s vision, so choose non-toxic face paint and make-up whenever possible instead. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights in order to see better, as well as be seen by drivers.

If you will be driving around this Halloween, there are some tips for you too.

  • Slow down in residential neighborhoods. Remember that popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
  • Be especially alert and take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
  • Reduce any distractions inside your car, such as talking on the phone or eating, so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

Only 1/3 of parents talk to their kids about Halloween.

To help make sure kids stay safe this Halloween, Fed Ex is offering one o my readers a Halloween safety pack.

You will win

Reflective bag

reflective stickers

flashlight

and more…….

This will be a very short giveaway as Halloween is so soon.

To enter: Tell me what your kids will be for Halloween.
