Lowell Milken Center Discovery Award

My children are still young but it’s important to begin teaching kids about generosity and selflessness at an early age. That’s why I was so entranced by the Lowell Milken Center’s Heroes project which combines two important objectives — honoring heroes and educating young people about those heroes.

The Lowell Milken Center encourages students from throughout the United States to submit research projects which document the lives and deeds of individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to improve the lives and situations of others. Some of the heroes have actually endangered their own lives to save others, such as Irena Sendler who saved hundreds of Jewish children in Nazi-occupied Poland and was tortured and threatened with death by the Nazis for her actions. Others promoted civil rights in adverse circumstances, promoted safety, became war heroes or were nominated because they followed their conscience and faced consequences when they didn’t go to war.

As a mother, I am pleased because, not only does the Lowell Milken Center honor these heroes, but they do it in a way that promotes education and brings young people into the process of nominating and honoring these people.

The Lowell Milken Discovery Project allows young students from fourth through twelfth grades to nominate a hero and then chronicle the individual’s story through careful investigation. The process of researching is, itself,an entire educational undertaking which teaches the students the proper methodology necessary for first-class research.  The demands are rigorous –a process paper, an annotated bibliography, primary sources and examples of the ways that the person continues to inspire and serve as a role model.

The Lowell Milken Center offers $10,000 for the first prize as well as additional prizes donated by the Center’s founder Lowell Milken. The project inspires me as a way to promote values while supporting American students who produce high-quality work. The project says to our kids “you can do it!”

On all levels, this is an amazing project and I look forward to the day when I will be encouraging my own children to get involved.

Oral B Stages and Pro Health for me thoughts and GiveawayClosed

I recently got to try out Oral B stages toothbrushes and ProHealth for me toothpaste. I even was able to let some friends in on the greatness and try it.

Crest an Oral B Pro Health For Me is the first and only complete line of oral care products for tweens, created to protect all the areas dentists check in kids mouths. Like fighting cavities, strengthening teeth enamel, and freshening their breath.

Three steps in a healthy oral care regimen are:

  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing once a day
  • Rinsing twice a day
  • changing your toothbrush every 3 months

The first thing that most of my guests realized was just how cute the stage 3 toothbrushes are. They come in pink and purple and of course are covered in princess designs.  They even provided flossers to match. That was definitely a big hit with the kids. WE also received Pro health for me mouth wash, but my kids are still trying to figure out how to use it properly. They said it does smell good and tastes good.

We were going to have a viewing party but, it didn’t really work out the way we had hoped So we tried and made the best out of our own little party.

what is a party without popcorn!

I wasn’t able to get many pictures during the party. After having popcorn the kids wanted to get straight to brushing their teeth.

The girls loved their new tooth brushes and toothpaste.

For more information on Crest visit their site, and you can always get updates from their teams on Twitter @Crest and @OralB.

I do have a couple of extra toothbrushes, flossers, toothpaste,  mouth wash and coupons that I would love to share with a US reader. You will receive whats pictured below.

Finding the Best Diamonds For The One You Love

When my husband proposed he didn’t use a ring, he just asked. Which was fine by me, Since he was preparing to deploy in just a few months. We just wanted to be married before hand.  We  had a courthouse wedding with gold bands we bought a department store. We didn’t have any family or friends there it was just us. So I have alway s Dreamed of having a big wedding with family and matching rings everything. Some day that will happen!

When my husband was deployed I ended up losing my gold band, at beauty school. So I went out to a department store and I got matching wedding bands. It’s a nice band but cheap, and now falling apart. It’s just a gold wedding set with a few diamonds, that are not real. It’s not anywhere near being my dream band. Even though we are far away from having our big wedding, I still like to look around for my dream wedding ring. There are just so many different styles and cuts to choose from it can be overwhelming.  I just want a nice ring, just with a few small diamonds

I don’t want anything really fancy just a wedding band set with a few sparkly diamonds.  I have found a website that lets you create your own ring and choose every aspect of it and I love that. The site is Called 77 Diamonds and they have so many different ring styles and occasions to choose from. Engagement rings, promise rings, wedding bands, and even more than that they have earrings and necklaces.

What To Expect When Expecting Giveaway open To US and Canada Closed

When I was pregnant with my first child, I was totally lost on everything. We lived so far from everyone in my family, I could only ask for advice over the phone. So I turned to books, What to Expect When you’re expecting was a great guide. I felt like I was learning everything to be prepared for my daughters birth.

Then when my daughter was born it was an extreme challenge, because my husband was deployed to Iraq. I was all on my own raising a baby for a year. What to expect the first year really helped me understand, why she was doing certain things and when to start on solids etc.   I felt that I got all the information that I needed.

Then of course I moved on to What to expect the second year, but by that time I had an almost 2-year-old and a baby.  It was a great book to help me explain to her, about a new baby in the house.

The great people at What To Expect When Your Expecting is offering A lucky US or Canada reader.

  • What to Expect When You Are Expecting
  • What To Expect The first Year
  • What To Expect The Second Year

To enter:  Tell me one thing you wished you learned before the birth of your child?  EX: I wish I would have learned/researched more about episiotomy.
