Holiday Gift Guide: Language Learning with Rosetta Stone

415dof79s0L__SL500_AA280_

From site:   Rosetta Stone began with one man’s quest for a better way to learn a language. Allen Stoltzfus began studying Russian in the 1980s, but became frustrated with his slow progress. Fortunately, he knew there was a better way to learn a language, through immersion, which he had experienced years earlier while studying in Germany. Allen’s command of German was a direct result of being a part of the culture and the world of Germany, instead of sitting in a classroom. He immersed himself in the language, and discovered German the way he had acquired his first language…naturally and without translation.

And so, an idea was born. Allen envisioned using computer technology to simulate the way that people learn their native language—with pictures and sounds in context, and with no translation. Allen went to his brother-in-law, John Fairfield, who had a Ph.D. in computer science, to explore the possibilities. John loved the idea, but he and Allen had to wait until technology caught up with their vision.

Rosetta Stone makes learning a language fun, easy and effective. The name Rosetta Stone comes from the artifact that had unlocked the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphics for linguists.

I received the Spanish version (Latin America) to try out.

***It was a little hard to keep up, i’ve never taken spanish before. This is a better way than traditional books, or taking classes in school. My husband is in his second year of spanish in college, and Rosetta stone has been extremely helpful. The set came with software, a headset, and audio companion software. I had trouble speaking the words correctly, so that was a little frustrating. After a little while i got the hang of it, I’m still not perfect in the language, but i can understand it a little better, and am Learning the words.

I got to try several different foods from the great value brand.  I tried the toasty o’s cereal, cinnamon crunch cereal, shortbread cookies, cheese crackers, and twist and shout cookies.

All the foods taste the same as the national brands, but I have tried frozen great value products and i don’t think they taste the same. The toasty o’s cereal i would say tastes better than regular Cheerios. Cheerios always left a nasty after taste in my mouth and the toasty o’s didn’t. The cinnamon crunch cereal tastes the same as cinnamon toast crunch.

The shortbread cookies i’m not a fan of. but my children loved them. The  twist and shout cookies Tastes the same compared to oreos. It would make them a lot better if they were in fresh packs that are resealable. after we opened the cookies they went stale fast.

The cheese crackers taste the same compared to cheese its or cheese nips.

Overall it saves you money and tastes the same. I’ve also tried great value milk and apple juice, they taste great. The packaging though is just boring. There is not much color and excitement to them. My children are very picky and it’s hard to get them excited about certain foods.  If it doesn’t have a pretty package they won’t eat it.

You can find great value products at your local Walmart and www.walmart.com

Disclosure: I received great value products for free in exchange for my review, this however does not change my personal views.

National School Bus Safety week

avoidharm

October 19-23 is National School Bus Safety Week.

We live near several school bus stops, and I see so many people daily ignore the stop arm. It’s dangerous to ignore it and people will and do get hurt.  So please stop and Obey.  It is never legal to pass a school bus from behind when the red lights are flashing, and it is illegal to pass such a school bus when traveling in the opposite direction. In a few states, it is legal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights when traveling in the opposite direction on a divided highway.

26 million students who take the school bus daily – Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm!  This is the theme for the 42 annual School Bus Safety Week.

The yellow school bus has been found by the National Academy of Sciences and U.S. Department of Transportation to be the safest way to transport students, which is tremendously important considering half the nation’s students ride the bus daily.  Additionally, each school bus takes an estimated 36 cars off the road, decreasing traffic, especially around schools.  Despite this, less than half the nation’s parents (49 percent) realize the school bus is the safest way for children to get to and from school according to a recent American School Bus Council nationwide survey of parents

importance for drivers to follow the rules of the road and stop when the stop arm deploys, which includes red flashing lights and a stop sign, and children get on and off the bus.  The stop arm requires drivers in all states to stop, but this traffic violation is a common occurrence as noted in studies conducted by numerous states.

About School Bus Safety Week

School Bus Safety Week was created in 1960, commemorated by Congress and the President in 1969 and recognized most recently by a congressional resolution in 2006.  The goal of SBSW, which is sponsored each year by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and National School Transportation Association, is to emphasize the importance of a unified effort among students, parents and the motoring public to ensure a safe and secure ride for the nearly 26 million children who are transported daily on yellow school buses. This week also recognizes the hard work and dedication of school transportation professionals, especially the school bus drivers who ensure a safe journey for students daily. For more information about SBSW, visit www.napt.org.

Please teach your children, and everyone else the importance of this.  The American School Bus Council Web site features school bus safety coloring pages and a downloadable children’s book  www.americanschoolbuscouncil.org.
