Summer Pool and Playset Safety Tips

With the weather heating up, everyone is going to the pool. Each year 42,000 people go to the emergency room for pool and say related injurys. Underwriters Laboratories has provided me with some tips to share with my readers about pool safety.

  • If you have a pool at home, install a fenceThe fence should be at least four feet high and have a self-closing, self-latching gate that has a locking mechanism beyond a child’s reach.
  • Cut overhanging tree limbs and remove chairs or ladders from the pool area-to prevent children from climbing over the fence that surrounds the pool.
  • Keep grates and drain covers in good repair and secured in placeAlert your family and guests to stay away from these devices, as the suction from drain outlets can be strong enough to cause entrapment of hair or body parts, which can potentially cause a person to drown.
  • Make sure you know infant and child CPRif you own a pool.
  • Supervision is a must-Follow the 10/20 rule when you’re at the pool. The 10/20 rule states the supervising adult needs to position themselves to be able to scan the pool every 10 seconds, and reach the water within 20 seconds.
  • Always have rescue devices,  such as UL-LISTED life preservers, nearby
  • Flotation devices, toys and inflatable swimming aids are not safety devicesThey are toys and can easily puncture and deflate.
  • Always drain wading pools after children are done playingInfants can drown in just a few inches of water.
  • Have a telephone nearby and appropriate emergency numbers posted.
  • Remove all toys when you leave the poolToys may attract children to the unattended pool.

Another fun activity that kids love to do during the summer is play on playsets, but those can be very dangerous too. Underwriters laboratories is also sharing tips for playset safety.

Before installing your own playset in your backyard make sure your yard is big enough, follow directions, install a protective surface under playset in all directions, In case a child falls.

  • Carefully inspect backyard playground equipmentMake sure equipment is anchored safely in the ground, all equipment pieces are in good working order, S-hooks are entirely closed and bolts are not protruding.
  • Check for spaces that could trap children-such as openings in guard rails or between ladder rungs. These spaces should measure less than 3.5 inches or more than 9 inches.
  • Always supervise children on play set equipmentto make sure they are playing safely.
  • Never attach ropes, jump ropes, clothes lines, pet leashes or cords of any kind to play set equipment. If used improperly, they can be potential strangulation hazards.
  • Watch for potential trip hazards, such as rocks, tree stumps and concrete footings. Make sure you’re children are aware of them as well.
  • Do a sandbox check, Before letting your child dig in, rake through the sand to check for debris or sharp objects. Also, inspect for any animal contamination or insect problems.

I can’t get the video to embed into my post, but here is a fun video (link) of Timon and Pumba promoting water safety http://disney.go.com/disneyeducationalproductions/safetysmart/index.html

Comes in 6 varietys long grain, broccoli cheddar, rice chicken, taco style, sweet tomato, and  garden vegetable.

****This actually tastes like white rice, but is very plain. It’s very simple to make, but i think I would still prefer the boil in a bag rice. it’s easy and no mess to clean up. the apron is very cute and great for cooking.

U by Kotex Makes Having A Period More Comfortable

Growing up I hated getting my period. Tampons were uncomfortable and pads made me feel like I was wearing a diaper.  It was the worst time when I was a teenager, specially when you have to sit in class for hours and can’t go to the bathroom.

U by Kotex is a a new line of tampons, pads and liners, which feature a slim, thinner design, making them easier and more comfortable to use. And with bright, bold packaging and colors. I had my dad buy me pads growing up and he never minded, because the packaging was boring. Plus he’d embarrass me when someone look or asked about them.

U by Kotex has bright new packaging which I think is great for girls, but I’m not sure if my hubby would be willing to go pick these up at the store. They stand out a lot more than other items in the cart.  I received the liners and These are really thin, which is great for me. They are comfortable and you really can’t tell you’re wearing it, plus it keeps you fresh.

Watch the U by Kotex commercial, it’s hilarious

Sing A Long with Barbie Review

Growing up I was a Barbie fanatic, I had every car, doll and accessory imaginable. I loved the show Gem, but I never really got into Barbie dvds until my daughter took an interest. Now my daughters have tons of barbies, and almost every movie. Including the new Sing A Long With Barbie dvd we just received.

This DVD has all your favorite songs from the Barbie movies. I think it would have been a little better to have Barbie up on-screen like doing karaoke with you. It is mainly the scenes from each movie with the song.

The songs on the dvd are:

  • Connected (Barbie and the Diamond Castle)
  • Making my Way (Barbie and the Three Musketeers)
  • All For One (Barbie and the Three Musketeers)
  • Were Gonna find It (Barbie and the Diamond castle)
  • Here on My Island (Barbie as the Island Princess)
  • I need to Know (Barbie and as Island Princess)
  • Right Here in My Arms Reunion (Barbie as the Island Princess)
  • I am A Girl Like You (Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper)
  • The Cats Meow (Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper)
  • We Wish You a Merry Christmas (Barbie in A Christmas carol)
  • Chuzzlewit Jingle Bells (Barbie in A Christmas Carol)
  • Shine (Barbie in the 12 Dancing princesses)

This dvd also contains two music videos( Connected, and All for One).

My daughters love this movie, they danced around and sang watching this dvd. They Both love  Here on My Island and Connected, my favorite song would be Right Here in My Arms Reunion. The words are diplayed on screen for children to follow along, my kids don’t know how to read that though. This is a perfect Valentine Day Gift for any little girl!

I Don’t Want To Miss Contest

I hated missing school when I was sick. Now that i am a mother I try to ensure that my daughter stays healthy, so she can attend school. Although most of the time she gets sick from kids at school.  I have been really predacious this year with H1N1, I always carry hand sanitizer for my kids.

American Idol finalist Danny Gokey has teamed up with the Clorox Company, to launch the I Don’t Want To Miss campaign, designed to get teens and their teachers involved in flu prevention.

Now in its second year, the program features a contest that invites school musical groups, like glee clubs, show choirs, etc.  to develop a video performance of a song written by Berklee College of Music student Will Wells on what they don’t want to miss out on if they were home sick and why prevention is important. The winning school will win a music class led by former American Idol finalist Danny Gokey!
The Clorox company will donate $100 to the Sophia Heart Foundation, up to 10,000 dollars. The Sophia Heart Foundation was started by Gokey in honor of his late wife Sophia, and dedicated to helping children succeed in music.

Visit Clorox facebook page for more information.

Ideas for Projects and More with Fed Ex Office

There is a lot going on with the holidays, but I still tend to get bored from time to time. I have a stack of holiday photos i just took, that need to be placed in albums/scrapbooks, plus getting started on thank you notes. Mom Central let me know about a great new blog, started by Fed Ex. The FedEx Out Of Office Blog features great ideas and tips for invitations, rainy day activities, turning your childs art into a notebook or card, plus more.  The blog is adding new features every month. In december they are featuring great Christmas ideas and planning party tips. Future content will have videos, guest bloggers, giveaways, so check it out often.

This site is really cool, they have some wonderful tips. I’m working on turning my childs art projects into cards and more. Since my daughter started preschool, i have been swarming in pictures. So this is a great way to make thank you cards and let everyone know how she is doing in  school. Plus another great idea is to laminate all the art projects and make them into a book. Keepsakes kind of to look back on as sh grows.

For great tips and Ideas check out The FedEx Out Of Office Blog
